Artist Statement: Every photo has a focal point. They each show the development of architecture in the past 50 years. Each photo also contains the element of light. They all have shadows. Finally, they all have one object in common.
Compare and Contrast: The first photographs both have the mobil sign the being the focal point. The one by Shulman has a different sign and older cars. The second photographs are both photos of museums with a clear sky. My photograph lacks the front of the museum. The last photographs are both of fire stations. They differ with how they are built and where the photo was taken from.
Personal Background: He moved from small town Connecticut to i when he was 10. His career jump-started when he showed his photographs to Richard Nuetra. He shared more of his own work with Nuetra, but then he became indipendent. During his career he had famous clientele like: Raphael Soreeano, John Lautner and many more. He soon became one of the most influential architectural photographers . A highlight of his career was he received the LAA by ICP.
Style: Julius Shulman photographed architecture. He took lots of photographs of houses. What makes his photographs so special is the detail. Instead of you looking for something, the picture comes to you. This sense of reality made Shulman a one of a kind photographer. There is no one that brought architecture to life like him..
Philosophy: Shulman had a great eye for light, but also an understanding architecture. He combined these two features to make great photographs. His purpose for his photographs was to make the best of whatever he took the picture of. If you want to compare his photos to a person, his photos were optimistic. They always brought out the best of the objects.
Influences: He influenced my work a lot. He was a major photographer in the 1900's. That made his photographs all black and white. I always made sure that my skies were clear. I also made sure to make what the photo was of very obvious.
